January 2025 Tutor of the Month: Jonathan Kopel

Name: Jonathan Kopel

Major: Biochemistry

What courses do you tutor?

I tutor Biochemistry (BIOL 3611/3612), Organic Chemistry II (CHEM 2313/2314), and Foundations of Biology (BIOL 1107/1108)

How long have you been tutoring?

I’ve been tutoring since Fall 2022 on Navigate, and I transitioned with the rest of Northeastern over to Knack. This is my third full semester tutoring.

What is your CRLA Tutor Certification Level (if CRLA certified)?

I am a CRLA Level 1 certified peer tutor.

How have you represented Northeastern Peer Tutoring on Knack?

I have always strived to put my students first, whether it be extending my hours to times most convenient for my students or by giving students the ability to email me off-the-clock with any small questions concerning their coursework. I took this to the extreme by providing 8 hours of “drop-in” tutoring per course during finals. Students could come with any questions they had, similar to a professor’s office hours. At one point, I had about 20 students all in the room working together on practice problems and helping each other understand the material. I’ve made sure to continue fostering these kinds of student interactions. I love knowing that my actions are directly helping students become better scientists.

How has your experience as a Northeastern Peer Tutor impacted you?

I’ve learned that I really enjoy tutoring and helping other students understand the material, so much so that I’m considering doing a professorship after medical school. Being a Peer Tutor has also allowed me to make multiple connections between my current and previous courses, helping me understand course content better (which I can then use to help my students even further). I’m able to use examples from completely different courses to explain a topic. Despite being hectic at times, I’ve loved my time as a Peer Tutor.

Student Testimonials:

  • “Really nice and understanding, I felt much more confident after the session and feel confident about getting a good grade in orgo 2”
  • “Clearly explained the concepts relating to Henderson-Hasselbalch, pKa & pH that I was having trouble grasping at first and gave us practice problems to test our understanding. Very helpful and patient!”
