February 2025 Tutor of the Month: Gabrielle Martin

Name: Gabi Martin
Major: Mechanical Engineering
What courses do you tutor?
Primarily, I tutor Organic Chemistry I & II.
How long have you been tutoring?
I have been tutoring on Knack since September of 2024, but have been a peer tutor since my junior year of high school.
What is your CRLA Tutor Certification Level (if CRLA certified)?
I am working towards a CRLA Level 1 certification.
How have you represented Northeastern Peer Tutoring on Knack?
As someone who really struggled with academics in high school and turned it around in college, I do know what itβs like to need help with a class or two. That being said, I was very much supported by my teachers and their efforts, and I strive to provide the same level of knowledge and kindness that they gave me to my tutees. While I certainly try to make my sessions as effective and efficient as possible from a knowledge perspective, I understand that having trouble with the material is not necessarily the only reason they are not doing well in a class that is hard, so I always ask how they are doing and try to be their biggest cheerleader to help them build confidence in themselves.
How has your experience as a Northeastern Peer Tutor impacted you?
Being a Northeastern Peer Tutor is one of the highlights of my college experience. It is really rewarding to see other students work hard, put in the effort, and see amazing results. Whether I work with a tutee just once, or weekly, it is always nice to get to know someone new and I enjoy helping them understand (and hopefully enjoy) Organic Chemistry. Outside of simply being enjoyable, being a tutor has helped me become a more confident and effective communicator, as I switch my tutoring style to fit the learning style of whoever I am working with. Finally, tutoring has allowed me to stay sharp on my Organic Chemistry skills, and the joy I get from tutoring it has inspired me to apply for a second major in chemistry.
Student Testimonials:
- Gabrielle helped me understand how to interpret and solve R and S configurations from scratch. I really had no idea where to begin but she really went in depth to help me get there. Even though I made many mistakes and had many questions, I left feeling confident in R and S configurations in such a short amount of time. She’s also very kind, thank you!
- Gabrielle is a great tutor! She explained everything clearly and made a lot of difficult concepts much easier to understand. I really appreciated her patience and encouragement. Her tips were super helpful, and I feel much more confident going into my exam. Thank you!
